Three Landscaping Challenges Solved with One Backyard Privacy Fence

At Extreme Green Lawn & Landscape we’re known for getting creative in solving residential landscaping challenges. We were able to achieve three goals that the customer had requested for this small project.

1. Re-Direct Water Away from the Home’s Foundation

The main area of concern was to re-direct water away from the patio and the house foundation, and keep it going into a swale towards the street. This is certainly a factor in most landscaping projects. Of course we never want to inadvertently direct water toward a home. Sometimes older plantings, buried utilities or even simple erosion can cause improper water flow. These can be corrected with updated landscaping to help guide the water away from your patio, home and basement.

2. Add Visual Appeal to the Landscape

The second concern was creating something other than just a bunch of plants thrown onto a berm—the old adding form to function adage. The homeowner recognized the need for some landscaping in the yard, but wanted to be sure it was something nice to look at. This is their backyard and they spend time on the patio area. We needed to create a landscaped area in the yard with plantings to complement the visual appeal of rest of the backyard.

3. Add Privacy to the Backyard

Finally, much like lots of the newer subdivisions in southeast Wisconsin, there wasn’t much for natural privacy in the backyard. We designed a privacy “fence” that combined both natural growing elements and stone. Three fence sections were installed, separated by arbor vitae. In time, the Emerald Green Arbor Vitae will fill in the gap between the fence sections. We specifically chose the Emerald Arbs due to their growth habit that will continue to grow upward, but will not become too large in diameter that they will infringe, or damage the fencing.
